Lawsuit Seeks to Block Trump's White House UFC Birthday Fight

(MENAFN) A legal challenge filed over the weekend is aiming to halt a mixed martial arts event that President Donald Trump intends to host at the White House on his 80th birthday, framing the spectacle as an unauthorized and commercially exploitative use of federal grounds, US media reported Sunday.

The suit was lodged Saturday by the Public Integrity Project, representing a Vietnam War veteran and a civic activist — both residents of Virginia — media reported.

At its core, the filing contends that a structure erected on White House property for the event was never lawfully sanctioned, having bypassed congressional authorization and a mandatory environmental review. The lawsuit further argues that staging a for-profit sporting event on White House grounds stands to financially enrich Dana White, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), as well as Trump himself — pointing to a spring report indicating the president had acquired $50,000 worth of stock in UFC's parent company.

The plaintiffs also push back against the administration's assertion that the fight falls within the scope of congressional approval granted for events commemorating America's 250th anniversary, contending that the UFC bout serves primarily as a vehicle for brand promotion and a celebration of Trump's birthday rather than a genuine tribute to national independence.

Media confirmed it had reached out to both the White House and UFC for comment on the legal challenge.

The bout is scheduled for the White House South Lawn on June 14 — coinciding with both Trump's 80th birthday and Flag Day — with fighter weigh-ins set for the preceding day at the Lincoln Memorial.

Plaintiff Paul Romano, a retired Air Force sergeant and Vietnam veteran, expressed outrage over the choice of venue in a news release: "The Lincoln Memorial is sacred ground, and it honors everyone who has ever worn this country's uniform. Using it as a backdrop for a for-profit cage fight so the President and his friends can make money is a desecration."

The lawsuit also references reports that UFC is marketing VIP packages priced between $1 million and $1.5 million, citing the figures as further evidence that White and Trump are leveraging the event for personal financial gain.
